Thomas & Mary Evens House 1785
Evesham Township, with its administration dedicated to cultural growth, offered the Center an historic house which was standing vacant and in disrepair on the grounds of the Indian Spring Country Club.
Originally this house, built in 1785, was the home of Thomas and Mary Evens. The building’s exterior holds onto its second story is the large “E” for Evens, with other bricks initially a “T” and “M” for Thomas and Mary, and a large “1785” date. The home remained in their family for 165 years, until it was sold in 1950 to the Jaggard’s, also a prominent Evesham family.
The property was purchased by Evesham Township in the mid 1950’s with New Jersey State Green Acres funding. With grants from the New Jersey Historic Trust and Evesham Township, this structure was returned to life. Reconstruction took two and half years and in October of 1999, the Center for the Arts moved into the house. Finally, the Center has a permanent home!
